Governor Barbara Roberts to keynote UCC’s Conference on Extraordinary Living on Friday

Winchester— Former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts will keynote the Conference on Extraordinary Living this Friday, September 5 at Umpqua Community College.
In an address called “Looking Back, Looking Forward,” Governor Roberts will speak at 9 am at Jacoby Auditorium at the day-long conference that runs from 8 am to 3:15 pm. Her address will be followed by a “meet and greet” with her, other presenters and attendees and an opportunity to view the many exhibits associated with the conference.
Previously called the “Conference on Aging” and now in its 26th year, this highly popular day, organized by the UCC community education department, is looked forward to each year for the wide variety of sessions, exhibits, talks and demonstrations it offers dealing with the second halves of our lives.
For example, some of this year’s sessions deal with such topics as handling stress, the stories we read to our children, “Stepping into the Writing World,” traveling on a shoestring, preserving our heritage with computers, Qigong, a gentle form of exercise for strengthening our immune system, business in retirement, you and the internet – “finding stuff,” investment strategies and financial planning, taking charge of our medical care, writing our memoirs and many others – 39 in all offered in three workshop sessions.
Governor Roberts is a descendent of Oregon Trail pioneers and is recognized as a strong advocate for children, the Oregon Health Plan, Head Start, hospice and human rights. Starting as unpaid legislative advocate for disabled children, she held public office in Oregon for 24 years including as majority leader in the Legislature’s House of Representatives, secretary of state and, beginning in 1990, two terms as governor. She currently is working on an autobiography that is expected to be released in 2009.
The $25 admission fee includes a box lunch as well as all the speakers, the three workshop sessions and exhibits. The College can help with transportation to and from the Conference as well as assistance getting around on campus. Registration begins at 8 am in Jacoby Auditorium.
