Take your Mom to Work Day

Hannah Radford

Mother supports daughter in the pursuit of a career.

ROSEBURG, Oregon – We’ve all heard the expression the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. In the case of UCC Dental Assisting student Hannah Radford and her mom Gail, that saying is only partially true. Gail has been a dental assistant in Roseburg for almost 37 years so it seemed logical Hannah would follow in her footsteps. Well, not exactly.

Hannah recently invited her mom to UCC’s high-tech dental lab and classroom. Under local dentist Dr. J. Lee Sharp’s watchful eye, dental assisting students took digital x-rays on volunteers. Being a mom who encourages her daughter to chase her dreams, Gail happily volunteered to be Hannah’s patient for a day. She sat through a series of x-rays to get a first-hand look at what Hannah has been learning how to do.

Even though Gail is a successful dental assistant, Hannah sees dental assisting as a starting point to achieve her dream of becoming a dental hygienist.

“You can say Hannah came to dental assisting in her own time and with some coaxing from me,” Gail said.

Hannah didn’t jump right in. It took her some time to wrap her mind around finishing her studies at UCC and then transferring to Oregon Institute of Technology’s hygienist program.

“I’m better suited as a hygienist,” Hannah said. “I like doing the same thing over and over. Dental assisting has too much variety for me. I like knowing that I’ll basically do the same thing each time a patient sits in the chair. I like the repetition.”

Hannah will graduate from UCC this June as an Expanded Function Dental Assistant. But this year’s graduation is more of a next step than a final step. She’ll spend another year at UCC working to get her prerequisites like anatomy, biology, and other science classes out of the way.

With Hannah’s goals set, and Gail having “first-hand” knowledge of her daughter’s skills, the apple clearly hasn’t fallen very far from the tree. It’s just a different variety.
