ROSEBURG, Ore., Jan. 3, 2025 – Umpqua Community College (UCC) has completed the first phase of student housing renovations in downtown Roseburg on Jackson Street at the building that was formerly Newberry’s department store and most recently the home of Redeemer’s Fellowship. Twenty-nine students move into the new accommodation this week, freeing up housing unit across the community and continuing the college’s plan to support downtown vibrancy.

The development of student housing in downtown Roseburg is a key component of UCC’s strategic plan to expand programming while providing students with accessible living spaces. The initiative also aims to enhance the region’s economic and cultural vibrancy.
“We are proud to play a role in the revitalization of downtown Roseburg while supporting the college’s growth and the community’s success,” said Dr. Rachel Pokrandt, president of UCC. “Our students love living in the heart of our community and the community loves them in return.”
Currently, more than 180 students live in UCC housing across multiple buildings in Roseburg. Since 2023, UCC has acquired over 62,000 square feet of downtown property, including Hawk’s Hideaway (the former Newberry’s building), Hawk’s Nest (the former Flegel Center), and the former Post Office building. Renovations at Hawk’s Nest are complete, and the building is fully occupied.
