Upward Bound is a comprehensive outreach program that provides a multitude of academic resources to low-income students with GPAs above 2.5, who are the first in their families to potentially attend college. Schools participating in the program include: Roseburg, Douglas and South Umpqua high schools, and Days Creek Public Charter School.
The 65 student participants will receive benefits that include one-on-one academic tutoring, career and course assistance, college entrance exam preparation, financial aid planning, and instruction in core curriculum. The program also provides exposure to academic programs and cultural events, career exploration activities, paid work-study and job shadowing.
“Our team is really excited for this opportunity to help young adults overcome barriers to enrolling in higher education, said UCC’s Educational Talent Search/Upward Bound Director, Mary Morris. Most of our students are first-generation college-bound students and are often the first in their family to attend college. Working with students weekly and sometimes daily helps them develop the motivation, skills and self-advocacy that they need to be successful in life.”
