2018 SkillsUSA Oregon State Champs

ROSEBURG, Oregon – Congratulations to the Umpqua Community College (UCC) 2018 SkillsUSA Oregon State Championship recipients (pictured above, left to right: Nazario, Kevin, Carlos, Derek, Ken, Matt, Lazareth, James). The statewide competition was held this past weekend. The following placed in the Automotive Service Technology and Welding categories:

Automotive Service Technology

  1. Matt Chace (State Champion & National Qualifier)

Welding

  1. Nazario Ferguson (State Champion & National Qualifier)
  2. Derek Meier
  3. Carlos Lopez

The national qualifiers have the opportunity to compete in the National SkillsUSA Competition that will be held in Nashville, Tennessee in late June.

I was in a homeless shelter with my son, who was just entering first grade. He was still in that place where he didn’t want to go to school. He wanted to stay at home with mommy all day and play, and I’m trying to explain the importance of education. While I’m doing this, I’m thinking, I’ve never even gotten my GED.”
