ROSEBURG, Oregon – The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College (UCC) presents Monsterbet, a series of paintings by California artist, Heidi Brueckner. Monsterbet is a figurative series based on the traditional format of children’s alphabet rhymes. Each letter stands for an invented monster that has a particular quirk, sometimes silly and fanciful while simultaneously touching on themes of human vice, morality, and fear.
Heidi Brueckner is a Professor of Art at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, where she teaches painting, drawing, and design.
A native Californian, Brueckner studied at the University of Heidelberg and The Goethe Institute in Germany in the late 1980s. During this pivotal year, she was able to visit the major museums of Europe and found herself heavily influenced artistically by 20th century German art. Brueckner received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1991. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Painting degree from University of Kansas in 1997.
Monsterbet is on display through Dec. 4, 2019. The Art Gallery, located in the Whipple Fine Arts Center, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and during special events.
