ROSEBURG, Oregon – Umpqua Community College (UCC) hosted its first obstacle course race this past Saturday, April 21. Nearly 40 competitors from Portland to Medford traveled to Roseburg to participate in the College’s inaugural Champions Challenge event.

The first heat of the day started at 9 a.m.; a new heat started at the top of each hour. The top overall times returned for the last heat of the day in the championship final.

Cody Jones, a UCC Nursing Program student, took first place in the men’s division.

Kyndall Wiley, an athlete from Medford who is training for a marathon, took first place in the women’s division.

UCC Obstacle Course Racing Coach Andrea Bowden was impressed by the number of people who came to compete from outside of the Umpqua Valley. In turn, many of those out-of-town competitors were impressed by the difficulty of the course; the hills and deceptive rock climbing wall were at the top of the list.

“That rock wall is definitely deceiving,” Coach Bowden said. “It could end up being a deal-breaker for some people.”
