Community Invited to Eleventh Annual Explore Event

ROSEBURG, Oregon – The community is invited to participate in the Eleventh Annual Explore Event at Umpqua Community College (UCC). The free event will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the UCC gym.

This annual favorite is primarily designed for students of all ages; elementary school, middle school, high school, and those attending UCC. The goal is to teach these students, and their family members, about potential STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers and educational pathways. More than 40 local employers, along with representatives from UCC and a number of four-year universities, will be set-up at the event.

UCC hosts this event each year to provide people of all ages with the opportunity to learn first-hand information about the many different learning and career opportunities our entire community has to offer, Clay Baumgartner, UCC’s Engineering/Surveying and Computer Information Systems Program Chair, said. This unique opportunity is accomplished with support from local businesses and industry.

This year’s event, which is being sponsored in cooperation with the Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub, has been expanded to include Technology, Natural Resources, and Manufacturing. Programs from automotive to welding will also be on display. Free food and prizes will also be available.

The event is a lot of fun and a great learning experience, Baumgartner said. We truly enjoy doing this for our community.

Last year, more than 400 people attended. Registrations will be accepted at the door, but participants are encouraged to pre-register now to avoid long lines. The online form is located here: https://www.umpqua.edu/explore-UCC.
