Competitive Math Regionals Sums up at UCC

ROSEBURG, Oregon – Pencils were sharp and calculators were numerous as the Umpqua Community College (UCC) Math Department hosted its first-ever Oregon Regional Math Competition on Thursday, April 4. The event was held in the Danny Lang Teaching, Learning and Event Center with nearly 200 high school students from seven Douglas County high schools participating. The students were all factoring and formulating in hopes of earning their spot at the statewide tournament.

Students competed in five different levels; first-year algebra, geometry, second-year algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus. The exponential success of the event came from extensive planning that was started in December.

It was a really big collaborative effort with Communications and Marketing, the Admissions Office, all of us Math folks, and catering, Dee Winn, UCC Mathematics Department Chair, said. It was just a really good collaborative effort and we really appreciate everyone’s help and work.

Beyond the math competition itself, students also participated in a scavenger hunt across the UCC campus that encompassed several more offices and departments, while scores were being tallied. The top 12 percent of the students in each of the five levels qualified for the statewide tournament:

Level II: Algebra I

  • Charles Anderson
  • Cecile Larson
  • Matthew Cantwell
  • Caleb Andrews

Level III: Geometry

  • Braxton Tabor
  • Jason Huang
  • Koby Sewall
  • Marin Gray
  • Tatum Kelley

Level IV: Algebra II

  • Tyler Anderson
  • Lily Floyd
  • Brayden Michael
  • Samantha Hardin
  • Sahara Napper
  • Eva McMillan
  • Owen Warnack

Level V: Pre-Calculus

  • Micah Nichols
  • Alice Anderson
  • Piper Spier
  • Ethan Winn

Level VI: Calculus

  • Dominic Randall
  • Rachel Way
  • Michael Bober

This is the first time we’ve done a regional math competition, Winn said. We are pleased that everything went so well and I hope this event continues at UCC.

The Oregon Invitational Math Tournament will be held at Portland State University on May 18.
