Emerging as a Regional Leader

ROSEBURG, Oregon – Steven Moldenhauer strives to lead. As a TRiO/Upward Bound Academic Preparation Specialist for Umpqua Community College (UCC), he has been able to be a direct link in helping soon-to-be high school graduates take their first steps into the world of higher education.

I work in three high schools within Douglas County. My goal is to help students realize their potential and teach them how they can rise above, Moldenhauer said.

Most recently Moldenhauer has taken his own steps into developing his future in the world of education. As a member of the Northwest Association of Educational Opportunity Programs (NAEOP), Moldenhauer applied to join their Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) cohort of 2019-20. The year-long leadership development program has a focus on inspiring and cultivating leadership within the organization. This includes professional development, networking opportunities, and hands-on training. Each year only two participants from each of the organization’s member states are selected from the highly competitive pool.

Moldenhauer was one of the two representatives from Oregon to selected to be a part of this year’s cohort. I’m extremely excited about this opportunity, Moldenhauer said. This is a great chance to learn and grow, as well as represent what we do at UCC.

His journey begins this fall with his attendance of the 2019 NAEOP Conference in Coeur d’Alene, ID. His first meeting with his cohort will be taking place across the Idaho/Washington border at Gonzaga University in conjunction with the conference. From there Moldenhauer will participate in a year’s worth of work to develop further in the areas of team building, mentoring, networking, advocacy, and more.

For Moldenhauer this is a great chance for him to grow. My goal is to be a TRiO Director someday. I see this as a chance of me to build my skills, network with my peers, and prepare myself to take on bigger leadership roles.
