New Office Created to Support Student Success

ROSEBURG, Oregon – With a new academic year comes plenty of new additions on the Umpqua Community College (UCC) campus and 2018-19 is no exception. As UCC’s halls of academia fill once more, a new service-complete with a new office space-has made its home in the LaVerne Murphy Student Center. The addition means students will be served by a new Office of Admissions.

This initiative started last year with the goal of creating a Division of Enrollment Management. The UCC Board of Education approved the proposal in May. One of the plan’s key parts was to pull staff and resources together that would do more than admissions work. They would help students through all of the College’s on-boarding processes.

College processes can be confusing, Missy Olson, UCC’s Dean of Enrollment Management, said. Our goal is that this will allow students to have the personalized attention they need to help get them through the processes.

The processes include everything from initial admissions, placement testing, financial aid, registration, orientation, community outreach, and more. Olson leads the team, along with Recruitment Coordinator Jessica Richardson. The new division also has three new full-time staff members who serve as enrollment advisors: Dustin Cosby, Chelsea Hansen, and Jantyne Bunce. A to-be-named College Transitions Specialist will be established as well.

We hope to continue to see if there are unneeded obstacles in the way for students as they go through the (admissions) process, Olson said.

Funding for the Office of Admissions’ newly-renovated office space, which is located in the southeast corner of the student center building, came from a $40,000, one-time allocation from the State that was specifically designated for student success.
