UCC Art Gallery Opens the New Academic Year with Magical Realism

ROSEBURG, Ore., Sept. 18, 2023 – Umpqua Community College opens the Art Gallery this fall term, featuring an exhibit of paintings depicted in the style of Magical Realism. “Wilds Within” will be on display beginning September 25 through October 25 at Umpqua Community College’s Art Gallery.

“Wilds Within,” a coordinated exhibit featuring two artists, Tamara English and Kendra Larson, showcases landscape paintings about the experience of inner life. The exhibit features vibrant awe-inspiring and engaging color that transports the viewer to another world. Recent scientific studies, such as those highlighted in the NY Times, US Today, and Psychology Today, show that experiencing awe improves physical and mental health.

From the artist’s statement, “Themes explored in these paintings include the nourishing aspects of beauty and awe, healing qualities of plants, and spirituality. English’s oil paintings reveal the buoyancy and vibrancy found in connecting with what has sacred meaning, and exploring how our inner worlds are like gardens or forests that may be tended to and savored when one is spiritually engaged.”

“Wilds Within” will be on display at the UCC Art Gallery from September 25 through October 25, 2023. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free.
