ROSEBURG, Oregon – On Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, Umpqua Community College (UCC) will hold its annual Day of Remembrance to reflect on the events of Oct. 1, 2015. As granted by Oregon Governor Kate Brown, the campus flag will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset. Floral arrangements that collectively serve as a tribute to survivors and those lost will be displayed around the campus flag pole beginning Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Since the campus is closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions, the annual Remembrance ceremony will be held virtually via live-stream. The ceremony, which will include a video highlighting construction of the campus memorial, brief comments by invited guests, and a time of remembering the Umpqua Nine, will be live-streamed on the campus YouTube Channel.

Ceremony timeline:

• 10:30 a.m. Ceremony begins
• 10:38 a.m. Moment of silence
• 10:40 a.m. Ceremony concludes

Construction on the campus’ permanent 10/1 Memorial started earlier this year. However, the project has yet to be completed due to COVID-19 and recent wildfire restrictions. Once the project is finished and all restrictions in which the campus currently operates have been lifted, the memorial will be open to public visitors.

We recognize and value the community’s interest in our annual Remembrance Day events, which is why we have chosen to share the event virtually since the campus is currently closed to the public, Tiffany Coleman, UCC’s Public Information Officer, said.

Anyone who wishes to visit the floral arrangement displays near the campus flagpole can do so-following strict social distancing and face covering guidelines-on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
