UCC Presents ‘Two Guys with Guitars’ in Concert

ROSEBURG, Oregon – The Umpqua Community College (UCC) Fine and Performing Arts Department presents Two Guys with Guitars – Cameron O’Conner and James Bishop-Edwards in concert on Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. The two virtuoso guitarists join forces to present an evening of guitar ranging from music of the Renaissance and Baroque to new 21st Century compositions.

O’Connor (pictured above, left) enjoys a diverse career in solo, chamber, and contemporary music. He is on the faculty at Oregon State University, and has previous served on the faculty of CSU Bakersfield, Riverside City College, and Bakersfield College. Recent and current performance engagements include those with Michael Tilson Thomas and the New World Symphony, and John Adams and the Colburn Orchestra. Cameron made his Lincoln Center debut under the baton of Tan Dun, in which he performed the Concerto for Six, an ensemble piece which mixes Western and Eastern musical idioms. His playing has been featured in films, including James Franco’s Don Quixote and Scott Tennant’s instructional classic Pumping Nylon. Cameron graduated from California State University Northridge, received his Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, and doctorate from the University of Southern California.

He was head of the Guitar Department at Southern Oregon University for several years, and previously on the faculty as Guitar Instructor at California Polytechnic University. James has over 20 recordings to his credit, which feature his arrangements of American and European classics. Six books of these arrangements have been published by Mel Bay Publications. A few of his many performance credits include: featured artist at the 1999 and 2005 La Guitarra California Festival, the Santa Barbara Arts Festival, Richard Schneiders’ Lost Mountain Guitar Festival, and soloist with the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and Jefferson Baroque Orchestra.

The concert will be held in the Whipple Fine Arts Center on the main UCC campus. Admission is $10.00 per person at the door; students are free.
