UCC Schedules 2018 ‘Day of Remembrance’

ROSEBURG, Oregon – On Monday, Oct. 1, Umpqua Community College (UCC) will hold its annual Day of Remembrance to reflect on the events of Oct. 1, 2015. Governor Kate Brown has approved the campus’ request to fly the flag at half-staff. A tribute to survivors and those lost will also be displayed around the campus flag pole from sunrise to sunset.

At 10:15 a.m. on Monday, a private event for UCC staff and students, affected family members, and the law enforcement community will take place on the UCC campus grounds. Due to the private, sensitive nature of this event, the public and media are required to keep a respectful distance.

We understand there will always be community interest in this event, but this time is for those directly impacted by the 10/1 events, UCC President Dr. Debra Thatcher said. Out of respect for those who choose to participate, we are asking people to give them the distance and respect they deserve.

This year, the UCC Remembrance Committee established a schedule for Remembrance Day activities through 2025. Since the request included flying the flag at half-staff, it was forwarded to Gov. Brown’s office for consideration. The approval has been received. In the coming years that Oct. 1 falls on a weekend, UCC will hold its Day of Remembrance the Friday before. Below are the dates through 2025:

  • Tuesday, October 1, 2019
  • Thursday, October 1, 2020
  • Friday, October 1, 2021
  • Friday, September 30, 2022
  • Friday, September 29, 2023
  • Tuesday, October 1, 2024
  • Wednesday, October 1, 2025

In addition to the Day of Remembrance events, the College has updated its permanent webpage called We Will Always Remember. The page was created last year to serve as a virtual memorial to acknowledge and honor those lost and affected by the events that took place at UCC on Oct. 1, 2015. The site also contains the following:

  • Annual Day of Remembrance activities and information
  • Photo galleries
  • Campus and community support
  • Links to campus and community resources
