Umpqua Community College

Affordable Housing for Rural Workforce Training Students

Umpqua Community College has purchased three buildings in downtown Roseburg, Oregon, and is actively remodeling them into affordable housing for students. One of these housing structures will also integrate into its lobby the Woolley Center, a community learning space offering programs to the general public including Adult Basic Skills, English Language Learners, and GED Testing preparation and support.

UCC will more than double its student housing capacity by 2026, which will help support enrollment and ensure continued success of rural students by helping them with basic needs as they pursue workforce training and education credentials. The housing units will be practical and versatile to meet the needs of our diverse student population and will include traditional dormitory, single-occupancy, and family-friendly apartment style options.

This project represents UCC’s investment in a future for Roseburg in which nontraditional students face fewer barriers to pursuing higher education locally. The introduction of affordable, family-friendly housing downtown will integrate a diverse student population with the local business sector, driving economic growth and cultural vibrancy. Additionally, the development of housing in previously vacant buildings saves Roseburg’s limited housing inventory for other community residents, generating widespread, lasting impact for the general population.
